The Colors of Memories
I’ve always been fascinated by old buildings and their stories. I believe that these places, now dilapidated and abandoned after years of inactivity - most of the time for the sake of the progress - are capable of bringing back to the past who shared a piece of their story with them, allowing to feel again moments and sensations apparently dissolved that are, in fact, unchanged over time.
“The Colors of Memories” takes inspiration firstly from my own childhood memories and sensations and then from my mother’s stories.
Using two different pictures, one in black and white and the other in color, I want to represent two different perceptions of the same reality. The B&W photo, the most shallow, pictures the building in its present status: unused and emptied of its own story.
The lacerations on the picture allow the viewer to have a look at the colors below. They are not the real hues of the fully functioning edifice, but these shades are evoked to me by memories and emotions; with this new “dress”, these places show their nostalgic nature at their very best.
Mainly working with the collage technique, the physical manipulation of materials allows me to reflect upon the “physical” aspect of memories. Paradoxically, using ethereal shades makes the more abstract components disappear and, doing so, the essence begins to be more “touchable”.
I would like the viewer to focus on the nature of a specific emotion, linked to a specific memory, and not on the concreteness of the memory itself: this is the reason why I choose not to use the real colors of the buildings for this project.
